【英語学習】Do you know what “I’m lovin’ it” mean?

English-article

How you doin’ ?

Many English learners have seen Joey’s famous phrase on “FRIENDS” for hitting on women. ※It is usually used as a normal greeting, but Joey uses it as “pick up line” by the way he says it and his facial expressions. haha)

This symbol stands for ing, which is also used in the McDonald’s catchphrase you all have seen, 「I’m lovin’ it」  (Check it out next time you see it.)

This is because the “g” in “ing” doesn’t appear as a sound in actual speech, so it’s a colloquially focused notation.「áim lˈʌvɪŋ ít」

Also, if you are good at grammar, didn’t you find it strange that love is now ”loving”? If you can question that, you’re on a very high level!

We were taught in high school in Japan that state verbs that describe a state of being, such as “know, believe, like, love, live, etc.” usually don’t become progressive because they contain a progressive meaning! However, if you want to describe a state of affairs for a specific period of time, you can make it progressive!

※Reference : 一億人の英文法(English Grammar for “100 million people”)▶︎This is one of the best English Grammar books in Japan.

※”100 million people” means Japan’s population.

Example:”I’m living in Tokyo now.”  means “I live in Tokyo at the moment”(maybe for job or somthing…?)

In other words, by turning “I love it” into “I ‘m loving it”, This gives a sense of dynamism that focuses on the present.

There’s a lot to be learned from just one ad!

I’m hoping we can have some fun talking like this, focusing on everyday English! I look forward to seeing you again!

Let’s keep our spirits up today!
